This is only a quick post, more of a brain dump about the endless choice when it comes to web hosting.
And boy aren't we spoilt for choice. There's Rackspace (they have the rackspace cloud which includes cloud sites, cloud servers and cloud files). Does anyone remember Rackspace back when they were known as mosso?
Anyway there's more to get through, we have Amazon EC2, and lets throw in S3 while we're there. Media Temple have their own cloud offering, and a pretty looking site to match. You can't go past VPS.NET or linode, both very appealing options right there with their own pros and cons.
Google App engine should get a mention, if only because they're Google (but more so because...they're awesome) and App Engine is pretty impressive.
I used to think there was nothing better then having your site in the cloud, but then again before I thought that I was of the opinion that there was nothing that could beat hosting it all yourself. Now I'm starting to think you should host it all yourself, maybe in your own cloud, or maybe using someone elses too.
The one thing I do know is that this is just the tip of the iceberg. As we start to see more initiatives such as the open stack (you can visit OpenStack here http://openstack.org/) thing will only get more interesting.
